MDO vs ACM vs Alum

Choosing the Right Sign Panel

Which Should You Use?

  • Choose MDO for stand-alone post signs or applications requiring panel rigidity without support.

  • Choose ACM when lightweight durability and aesthetic finish are key, especially when some structural support is available.

  • Choose Aluminum for framed signs or wall-mounts where support is constant and corrosion resistance is needed.

What is MDO? (Medium Density Overlay)

MDO is a wood-based panel that provides excellent structural rigidity without the need for a backing. It can span between posts and is well-suited for post-mounted signage or standalone panels.
We use only 1/2" thick MDO for its optimal balance of strength, durability, and manageable weight. It is highly resilient and ideal for rugged outdoor applications.

What is ACM? (Aluminum Composite Material)

ACM is made of two thin aluminum sheets bonded to a polyethylene core. It is known for its lightweight properties, exceptional flatness, and resistance to weathering.
ACM is best used when partial structural support is available. It does not peel or flake and is ideal for storefronts, wall-mounted signs, and decorative panels—both indoors and outdoors.

What is Aluminum?

Aluminum is a solid metal substrate that offers excellent corrosion resistance and professional finish. It is commonly used in wall-mounted applications or framed systems such as real estate signs.
While thinner aluminum (.040") requires a rigid backer, thicker gauges like .080" or .125" can be mounted to posts directly. Its lightweight properties make it easy to install, but it lacks the ability to span unsupported gaps.
